DINNER WITH THE PARENTS

Heat crawled up my face. Sometimes he had a one track mind.

“I meant about tonight. Are you okay with it? We can postpone it for a few more months.”

He nodded and my stomach dropped. He was going to back out.

“We can,” he said slowly, “but I don’t want to. I want tonight to be perfect, so I need to do a little shopping.”

“For what? Please don’t mention a suit or dinner jacket.”

“Why not? First impression is everything.”

“I want you to be you, Echo. I want you to be comfortable. So no suit.”

He grinned. “How about you approve what I wear? Will that make you happy?”

“Yes.” The second bell went off. “Okay, I better go.”

“Kiss goodbye?”

“No. It will escalate into—”

Once again, he cut me off with his lips and I let him. How could I not? The taste of him was addictive. When he eased off, he asked, “Want a ride to class?”

I nodded, my lips tingling, his scent still filling my lungs. One fraction of a second and I was in my seat. A few nearby students glanced at me and frowned. They were probably wondering if I’d been there the entire time. Echo winked and was gone.

Hours later, I pulled up outside our farm house and glanced up at my bedroom window. At times, he’d be waiting and wave. Or he’d appeared in my car on my way home, so we rode home together and caught up on what happened at school.

Could he still be out shopping?

I thought I saw Mom by the apple trees, but on close inspection, I realized it was a soul. Word had spread fast about my work and they kept me busy, but Echo had laid down the rules, so the souls knew not to come into my house or visit me at my school. I went to them when I was ready. There was also no hostile possession. The criminals tended to be aggressive, but they knew what awaited them if they dared possess me when Echo wasn’t around.

“Something smells good?” I called out when I entered the house. Our house always smelled of freshly baked pies. Today that scent was mixed with other spices. Dad wasn’t at his usual workstation and Mom wasn’t in the kitchen. “Mom?”

No response.

I wondered if they were making out. Usually, I’d be at swim until five-thirty, but swim season ended in February. I turned on the oven light and grinned at the casserole dish cooking. Smelled like lasagna or one of Mom’s famous potato dishes.

Wondering where they were, I opened the fridge and found a bowl of washed strawberries. We grew our own, which were juicier and sweeter, but Mom must have decided to buy Californian ones from the store, which meant tonight’s dessert was probably strawberry pie or cheesecake. I took half of the strawberries in a bowl and a bowl of home-made whipped cream and started to munch.

“Hey, sweetheart?” Dad called out.

I glanced over my shoulder and grinned. He was coming down the stairs, his clothes disheveled, which meant he’d just woken up. Dad was a writer and kept odd hours.

“Hi, Daddy.”

When he reached my side, he snagged a strawberry. “How was school?”

I shrugged. “The usual. I can’t wait for summer.”

BLURB

One lost love.
One lost best friend.
One hot soul reaper.

Straight out of the psyche ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The love of her life, the guy she’s loved from a distance for years, has moved away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.

The chemistry between them is mind-blowing. The connection defies logic. It doesn’t help that Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. A general pain-in-the-butt. Being around him makes her feel more alive than she’s ever felt before. But more important, the souls leave her alone when he is around.

Echo is perfect for her. Echo might even be her soul-mate. There is only one problem. Echo is a freaking soul reaper. A Grimnir. The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life. You see, once you fall for a Grimnir, your life will never be the same again.
